Carlos Garcia Named Sexiest Vegan Over 50. Maui activist Carlos Garcia, recently profiled in Maui Vegan Life, has been crowned PETA’s Sexiest Vegan Over 50. He beat out two other finalists and dozens of entrants from across the country to win an eight-day adventure through northern India, courtesy of VegVoyages—Vegan Adventure Tours.

Saturday, November 3, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon: Maui Nui Botanical Gardens will host its 15th annual Arbor Day 1,000 Hawaiian Tree Giveaway. One thousand Hawaiian trees will be given away, and every person may take a free tree, regardless of age. Hands-on cultural activities will allow everyone to try making traditional Hawaiian products from the leaves, bark, and fruit of native trees. THIS MONTH IN VEGAN HISTORY

November 6, 1910: The New York Times publishes an article about Elmer Lee, M.D.’s advocacy for a plant-based diet.

November 20, 1931: In a speech to the London Vegetarian Society, Gandhi lends support to the emerging vegan movement, emphasizing the moral basis of vegetarianism.

November 1944: British woodworker Donald Watson coins the term “vegan” to denote vegetarians who do not eat dairy and eggs. A group that would later be called the Vegan Society is formed. The first issue of Vegan News is published on November 24.

November 1, 1994: The first World Vegan Day is celebrated. It was established in 1994 by Louise Wallis, then Chair of the Vegan Society in the UK to commemorate the Society’s 50th anniversary.  Later November was declared World Vegan Month.

November 16, 2005: Donald Watson, the founder of modern veganism and coiner of the word "vegan," dies at age 95.
