Leilani Farm Sanctuary Re-Opens for Tours: Do you have a family member or friend you want to veganize? Tours of farm animal refuges have proven to be a successful way to get people to ditch meat. Elections Matter: For veganism on Maui to thrive, local, independent farmers must be empowered to consistently produce and distribute a wide variety of sustainable and affordable whole plant foods. It’s election time, which means that big outside corporations are using dark money – funds provided by secret donors – to bend Maui’s politics and commerce to their advantage.
One of the newest conduits of dark money is Hui O Maui Citizens for Change, a super political action committee (PAC) based in Reno, Nevada. Hui O Maui has funded efforts to crush efforts at increasing local control by defeating Maui charter amendments and progressive candidates. Before you vote, consider:

THIS MONTH IN VEGAN HISTORY
November 6, 1910: The New York Times publishes an article about Elmer Lee, M.D.’s advocacy for a plant-based diet.
November 20, 1931: In a speech to the London Vegetarian Society, Gandhi lends support to the emerging vegan movement, emphasizing the moral basis of vegetarianism.
November 1944: British woodworker Donald Watson coins the term “vegan” to denote vegetarians who do not eat dairy and eggs. A group that would later be called the Vegan Society is formed. The first issue of Vegan News is published on November 24.
November 1, 1994: The first World Vegan Day is celebrated. It was established in 1994 by Louise Wallis, then Chair of the Vegan Society in the UK to commemorate the Society’s 50th anniversary. Later November was declared World Vegan Month.
November 16, 2005: Donald Watson, the founder of modern veganism and coiner of the word "vegan," dies at age 95.
