Ground broken for new community garden: The Common Ground Collective has partnered with Haiku House to establish a new community garden. The Haiku House Common Ground Garden will showcase a new way for commercial landowners to support Maui's food insecure by increasing the supply of locally grown food for homeless people, struggling families, at-risk youth and seniors. Vegan leader dies:  Sarah Kenefick Taylor, an advisory board member of Leilani Farm Sanctuary, lost her brave battle against brain cancer. Sarah has written for Veg News and Aloha Living and has been interviewed for numerous radio and internet shows, including NPR, PBS and EarthSave Radio.  Her first book, Vegan in 30 Dayssold thousands of copies, and her second book, Vegetarian to Vegan, was included in the “Top 10 Vegan Cookbooks of 2014” and is the ‘go-to’ book for vegetarians who want to give up dairy and eggs and go vegan for good. MBA in Research Methodologies from Seattle University, as well as a Certificate in Plant Based Nutrition from Cornell University. Sarah was also a ranked tennis player with the United States Tennis Association. Maliko Country Farms to expand: After ironing out a few details with the county, Maliko Country Farms, 2250 Hana Highway in Haiku, is looking for new vendors.  It will host two food trucks, one food establishment, a coconut stand and the market from Tuesdays to Saturdays. The venue is closed Sundays and Mondays. Maliko Country Farms offers outdoor eating and takeout, local produce on Fridays at the Farmers' Market starting Oct 1 and locally made crafts and arts on alternating days. 

New Maui vegan retreat launched: Maui Sanctuary Healing Retreats are week-long and weekend retreats allowing participants to experience healing and relaxation in a peaceful, beautiful subtropical location while supporting sanctuaries for rescued animals. THIS MONTH IN VEGAN HISTORY

October 1848: The Vegetarian Advocate states that “. . . Pound cakes and tea-cakes are also extremely good made with oil (instead of butter and eggs), and cheese-cakes are well imitated by means of mashed potatoes mixed with oil and sugar put into a crust … without animal substance of any kind, or of eggs, milk and butter.” 

October 2, 1983: World Day for Farmed Animals is declared by the Farm Animal Rights Movement.  It is dedicated to exposing the needless suffering and death of sentient animals for food.

October 1995: Turtle Island and The Higher Taste introduce the first “Tofurkey.”

October 2003: Melbourne, Australia initiates a celebration of World Vegan Day on the last Sunday in October.

October 25, 2020: Vegan British racecar driver Lewis Hamilton won a record-setting 92nd victory.
