Vegan News for September 2023
How do you even begin to comprehend the tragedy of the Lahaina fire? Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, children, workers and friends are forever gone. The death toll keeps rising. A community of homes and businesses wiped out. More than 2,200 structures were destroyed, over 80% residential. Irreplaceable cultural centers key to Hawaiian history no longer exist. A vibrant economic engine on Maui has been decimated. Read more …
For updates on vegan-friendly Lahaina businesses, follow these links: Coconut Caboose, Moku Roots, Choice Health Bar, and a’a Roots.
A gofundme appeal has been established to help the employees of vegan restaurant a’a Roots, which has assisted relief efforts and has been able to reopen.
Twenty-six staff members of Choice Health Bar lost their homes to the Lahaina fire. You may donate to assist them here.
Moku Roots reports: “We are all safe and Moku is standing with no fire damage. We don’t have power or water yet, so we haven’t been able to get inside and get to feeding people in need, but I’m hopeful we’ll have power back on soon and we’ll be there 100% for the community. Since we aren’t able to open yet, we’ve been donating produce from our farms to organizations in areas that do have power and water to make nourishing food for people.
“Nine of the 20 members of the ‘Mo-kru’ lost their homes in the devastating Lahaina fire. You guys, our amazing followers have generously donated around $10,000, which is wonderful but not that much to go around to the nine who have to rebuild from nothing and the other 11 who are fortunate to have homes, but no income currently. If anyone else is able to donate, we would so appreciate it so that everyone who lost their homes can really have some help rebuilding their lives. Our VENMO is @mokuroots and there is a donate button on our website mokuroots.com.”
Sadly, the folks at Maui Garden Sushi have lost their home to the Lahaina fire. They vow to resume serving vegan miso ramen as soon as they are able.
As of August 25, the Haiku-based food truck Rainbow Kitchen raised more than $2,000 to provide 167 meals for displaced Lahaina families, volunteers and fundraisers.
