Vegan News for February 2025

Located in Kihei, Earth Aloha Eats serves plant-based comfort food to the community and tourists alike.

A bill to make plant-based meals the default options for hospitals, prisons, and government-sponsored events has been introduced in the Hawaiʻi legislature. Plant-based-by-default policies have achieved great success in other states.

The House of Representatives version of the bill, House Bill 828, has been referred to the Labor Committee, chaired by Representative Jackson Sayama, whose district includes Kaimukī and St. Louis Heights. Chair Sayama will need to hear the bill for it to advance through the legislative session that started earlier this month.

How You Can Help

If you support this legislation, please ask Chair Sayama to schedule House Bill 828 (2025) for a hearing. Chair Sayama's contact information is here. When you contact Chair Sayama, you might point out that, by expanding plant-based nutrition, HB828 will save taxpayer money, reduce negative climate impacts, generate income for local farmers and improve health. Similar programs have been effective in other locations. If you would like to receive automated updates on bills, register on the legislature's website.
