Compassionate veganism on Maui is alive and well, thanks the multiple grassroots efforts. The Common Ground Collective needs volunteers to help with fundraising. If you are interested, email cgcmaui@gmail.com or send a message through FacebookChilis on Wheels continues to seek volunteers to donate, prepare and deliver vegan meals and supplies to unsheltered people. Contact Nicole at 633-4811. Maui Food Not Bombs offers free vegan food at Paia Bay on the third Thursday of the month at 5:45 pm.

Toward a new normal: Although the pandemic is far from over, small, but important steps are being taken toward a new normal. For example, more and more vendors have been returning to the Upcountry Saturday Farmers Market. Dine-in table service under new health guidelines begins on June 5th. Many parks re-opened June 1. Taking appropriate health safeguards, let’s support vegan-friendly enterprises so that they may survive and prosper.

THIS MONTH IN VEGAN HISTORY

June 16, 1824 – Twelve men meet at a London coffee house and become the founders of the world’s first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

June 1842 – Bronson Alcott visits Alcott House, named in his honor.

June 19, 1997 – A British court rules that McDonald’s made false claims about the nutritional value of its food and is responsible for animal cruelty.

June 2001 – In response to pressure from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Burger King announces a set of animal welfare guidelines.

June 2018 A study published in Science asserts that the adoption of plant-based diets in the United States alone could cut greenhouse gas emissions by 61% to 73%, and that the global adoption of a vegan diet would reduce the use of agricultural land by 75%.
