Acts of aloha:  In these trying times a number of Maui vegans have performed many acts of kindness during these trying times.  Kudos to Shelly Brown, Jennifer Schmidt, Melody Hofmann, Sarah Haynes and all who have prepared and delivered vegan meals to ICU nurses at Maui Memorial Hospital.  … The Maui Chapter of Chilis on Wheels, which delivers vegan meals, first aid, personal hygiene supplies and more to homeless people has partnered with several groups to form Maui Rapid Response.  Volunteers are welcome. Follow Chilis on Wheels and Maui Rapid Response on Facebook for updates.

Anne Miura named a 2020 Maui County Volunteer Hero: “The County of Maui Department of Housing and Human Concerns’ Volunteer Center is recognizing 13 outstanding Volunteer Heroes for 2020. These are individuals who help make up the backbone of nonprofits. Anne Miura was the first to answer Chilis On Meals call for help two and a half years ago. Chilis on Wheels is a program that provides vegan meals to the unsheltered in Kahului. She has gone above and beyond preparing and hand-delivering over 2,100 meals to the homeless over the course of her service. She is resourceful and thoughtful, keeping meticulous notes on quantities, recipes, and what her homeless friends like most. Her creativity also shines through when creating traditional Hawaiian mixed plates out of vegan ingredients.”

Smart shopping:  Maui Food Hubs connects farmers with the community.  Current food pickup locations are 1087 Limihana Place, Lahaina and at UH Maui College, Makai parking lot on Wahinepio St. behind ‘Ike Le’a science building near the recycling center. More pickup sites in other regions will be launched soon.  Details here.  …  To support local businesses and farmers, the Maui nonprofit Common Ground Collective has prepared a Shop Local Directory.

New group launched: Maui Against Animal Slaughter is a grass roots organization formed by local activists in March 2020 in direct response to the new slaughterhouse opened by Mahi Pono just off Pu'unene Highway.  You can join and find more information here.

COVID-19 Information and Education: Maui surgeon, educator and vegan Irminne Van Dyken, MD, shares evidence-based videos about preventing and mitigating the impact of COVID-19 through her Out of the Doldrums website.
