Vegan News for November 2022
Without much fanfare, a number of relatively new outlets like Maui Garden Grove Café, Niu Life Kitchen, Rainbow Kitchen and Papio’s Place have expanded Maui’s vegan dining options, alongside established vegan or largely vegan enterprises like a’a Roots, Earth Aloha Eats, Choice Health Bar, Moku Roots and Maui Kombucha. Speaking of Papio’s Place, this month it relocates to South Maui Gardens, 35 Auhana Rd., Kihei.

THIS MONTH IN VEGAN HISTORY
November 6, 1910: The New York Times publishes an article about Elmer Lee, M.D.’s advocacy for a plant-based diet.
November 20, 1931: In a speech to the London Vegetarian Society, Gandhi lends support to the emerging vegan movement, emphasizing the moral basis of vegetarianism.
November 1944: British woodworker Donald Watson coins the term “vegan” to denote vegetarians who do not eat dairy and eggs. A group that would later be called the Vegan Society is formed. The first issue of Vegan News is published on November 24.
November 1, 1994: The first World Vegan Day is celebrated. It was established in 1994 by Louise Wallis, then Chair of the Vegan Society in the UK to commemorate the Society’s 50th anniversary. Later November was declared World Vegan Month.
November 16, 2005: Donald Watson, the founder of modern veganism and coiner of the word "vegan," dies at age 95.
November 2021: McDonald’s launches its first meatless burger, the McPlant, at select locations across the United States.
