Papio’s Place, a new vegan food truck.

Here on Maui we can use all the vegan dining options we can get — especially those featuring locally grown, minimally processed ingredients. With only about a dozen vegan or mostly vegan cafes and food trucks serving the entire island —and not a single upscale vegan — Nui Life Kitchen Deli and Papio’s Place are welcome new additions.  Read more here.

THIS MONTH IN VEGAN HISTORY

October 1848: The Vegetarian Advocate states that “. . . Pound cakes and tea-cakes are also extremely good made with oil (instead of butter and eggs), and cheese-cakes are well imitated by means of mashed potatoes mixed with oil and sugar put into a crust … without animal substance of any kind, or of eggs, milk and butter.” 

October 2, 1983: World Day for Farmed Animals is declared by the Farm Animal Rights Movement.  It is dedicated to exposing the needless suffering and death of sentient animals for food.

October 1995: Turtle Island and The Higher Taste introduce the first “Tofurkey.”

October 2003: Melbourne, Australia initiates a celebration of World Vegan Day on the last Sunday in October.

October 25, 2020: Vegan British racecar driver Lewis Hamilton won a record-setting 92nd victory.

October 2020: David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet is released on Netflix.  Sir David encouraged viewers to adopt a plant-based diet to protect the future of the planet.
