With support from the Maui Food Bank, other agencies and a group of dedicated volunteers, Maui Chilis on Wheels provides high quality vegan meals to people in need.  If you are interested in volunteering as a food preparer or deliverer, join the group here.  Save Maui Cats is a non-profit group of dedicated volunteers, devoting our time, money & resources to helping solve the tragic cat overpopulation on Maui. Check out SaveMauiCats.org or 808-344-6999. Anonymous for the Voiceless (AV) is an animal rights organization that specializes in educating the public on animal exploitation and fostering highly effective activism. With the availability of an ever-increasing number of plant-based meat alternatives, it’s important to avoid products are unhealthful. George Washington University’s Milken Institute of Public Health has prepared an online guide, Choosing Meat Alternatives that are Healthy and Sustainable.  This resource summarizes research about the health and environmental impacts of meat vs. plant-based diets and offers practical tips for selecting healthful plant-based products.  Vegans, vegetarians and anyone interested in plant-based meat alternatives should check it out.

THIS MONTH IN VEGAN HISTORY

December 2, 1861: Lewis Gompertz, author of an influential book promoting an early prototype of what is now called animal rights and veganism and a co-founder of the world’s first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, dies.

December 1931: The full text of Gandhi’s talk on the moral basis of vegetarianism is published in Vegetarian News.

December 1943: British woodworker Donald Watson, founder of the Vegan Society, presented "Should Vegetarians Eat Dairy Produce?" and noted that "the cow feels the loss of her calf in much the same way that a human mother would feel the loss of her child."
