Almost as disturbing as Maui’s annual celebration of animal cruelty is how few people participate in the well-established annual protest. Just Say No to Rodeo, a peaceful demonstration against animal cruelty at the Makawao Rodeo, will be held Sunday, July 7, from 11 am to 1 pm. Oskie Rice Arena, Olinda Road, Makawao.

With the recent loss of two vegan food trucks, it was encouraging to learn that an established California food truck, Tabay’s Mindful Kitchen, announced a move to 520 Keolani Place, Kahului, across from Costco. The truck is here, but work on the vehicle to ensure health department compliance is taking longer than expected. The opening date is now projected to be July 1.

By our count, there are currently 11 vegan or mostly vegan restaurants on Maui — six cafés (aaRoots, Hempy’s Shake and Wake, Maui Kombucha, Choice Health Bar, Earth Aloha Eats and Niu Life Deli) and five food trucks (Papio’s Place, Rainbow Kitchen, Ahonui Foods, Maui Garden Grove Café and Earth Aloha Eats.) While the total number of vegan outlets has grown considerably in recent years, there is not a single high-end, all-vegan restaurant anywhere on the island.

When it comes to whole food, plant-based restaurants on Maui, you can’t do better than a’a Roots. Founded in 2017, this vegan café is located in Lahaina at Napili Plaza, 5095 Napilihau St., #103.

There aren’t a lot of vegan restaurants on Maui, and we’ve lost one with the closing of Sprout Vegan Café in Wailea. On a positive note, in recent years several new vegan enterprises have opened and one has expanded. One of the newer vegan establishments is a small, friendly, whole food, plant-based café in Wailuku called Hempy’s Shake and Wake, 291 Hookahi St. Hempy’s features smoothies, desserts, sandwiches and soup.

New vegan food truck Ahonui Foods offer some of the best focaccia sandwiches you’ll find anywhere, as well as numerous other unique and flavorful items. It’s at 111 Stable Road, Spreckelsville (Paia), in a pleasant food truck park only about four-and-a-half miles from the airport.
